Indians love facial hair. For Indians facial hair is fascination, fashion, and fact of life. Indians consider facial hair to be a fabulous gift, and for some reason or other never want to part with it. You show me an Indian, and I will show you facial hair. From leaders to landlords, from poets to politicians everyone in India has it. Indians are proud of their fertile follicles, and they have every right to be. Indians sweep the facial hair category: longest mustache, longest beard, and even longest ear hair.
Indians come up with reasons to keep their facial hair. It can be religious: shaving is a sin, and clipping is a crime. For others, it is a god given gift and they save it as an offering to god. For the rest, it is the sign of power, authority, and masculinity. Indian police do not flash their badges; they display their mustaches. Indian villains do not ware eye patch; they twirl their mustaches. Indian lovers do not brag about biceps; they brush their bushy mustaches. Indian scholars do not focus; they fondle their facial hair.
When it comes to facial hair, mustache is the monarch in India. Little hair in the lip is all that needed to be hip. For Indian boys it is their means to manhood. For adults it is the mark of manhood. In India mustache has reached a status unparalleled in the world: only India has a mustache allowance - Indians get paid to keep a mustache. Mustache is so important that Indian Supreme court gets involved. Indians can tolerate discrimination based on sex, religion, age, economic status, or social class but not by the length of mustache. No hairsplitting allowed when it comes to mustache: all mustaches are equal.
When it comes to beard, India is a country of weird. There are three popular styles. Look I am lazy: face full stubbles preferred for its perceived rugged appearance and popular among the movie stars and copied by the young men all over India. Look I am busy: face covered by bushes preferred for its perceived maturity and popular among middle aged men who have nothing to. Look I do not need clothes: full length facial hair touching the toes preferred for its saintly appearance and popular among people too poor to shave.
And it is not just the men, Indian woman too love facial hair. In India a big brow brings beauty. Indian salons may not offer manicure or pedicure, but brow threading is must. It is not uncommon to find Indian women with a touch of mustache or a bit of beard.
In India, love is in the facial hair.
